Square Enix Onursal Başkanı Yasuhiro Fukushima Röportajı – Interview

Oruç : Indie developer Phil Fish has said that and I quote “Japanese games suck” very recently. After that, he apologized and said that he could be more tactful with this way of talk but also said his argument stands nevertheless. This statement divided the industry and players, some saying Japanese developers should not focus on JRPG’s so much in this gaming climate. Even ex-Capcom producer Shinji Mikami said that nearly all of the games he plays are Western games and Japanese game development industry should example the West. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Yasuhiro Fukushima: We, as Square Enix, are not only focusing on JRPG games. We do make all sorts of games. Some of the titles we recently released on mobile platforms was pretty successful. They created a revenue of 1 million to 5 million US dollars per title. We are trying very hard and we are getting results. In my opinion, whether it’s based on East or West, all game developers should try creating games in all genres and try cover all game genres. Everyone should example Square Enix in that regard.

O.: You’ve visited lots of game developing studios in Turkey and come together with lots of Turkish developers. What are your impressions?

Y. F: Some of the companies’ technologies are really high. Their technologies are on par with world standards. Having said that, market size is very small. But the market size will grow with the mobile platforms for sure. I’m not worried about the market size and growth in Turkey. I’m looking forward to forthcoming growth.

O.: Thank you for the interview and the time you spared for us.

Y. F: My pleasure.
